Art Appreciation

In the process of researching and comparing different works of art I chose to go to both Gilcrease and Philbrook museums. I believe the buildings and the surroundings of the buildings have a lot to do with how successful the museum is. Both museums have an elaborate entrance way which would lead the visitor to believe that once inside the same grandeur will continue. Upon entering Philbrook the awe from the exterior continued throughout the museum; on the other hand Gilcrease was rather disappointing to the viewer, especially after the beautiful entrance way. To me it looked as if most of their time has been spent on the exterior.

Gilcrease as a whole was an enormous let down; from the pieces of art to the way the pieces were light. The lighting gave Gilcrease a cold and crypt like feeling which made me rush through the museum. If there were any pieces of art with bright coloring or great detail the atmosphere was sure to kill it. Somehow in this gloomy environment I found six pieces of art that I enjoyed.

The first piece of art that really caught my eye was El Galope which was painted in 1943 by Jose Chavez Morado. This oil painting has a tremendous amount of motion from the horses running to the direction t

The final piece of art I viewed at Gilcrease was also by William R. Leigh titled Landscape on the Moon. This painting really gave me the feeling that I was sitting on the moon looking at Earth. The detail in this painting is in great detail because if you look closely at the Earth you can see the outline of North and South America. This painting moves from the bottom right corner to the top left corner. To help the eye in that direction the craters and boulders nicely make a hallway like formation. The only colors in this painting are hues of black and white.

The final piece I looked at had to have been my all time favorite. This piece is called Choose One by George Fisher. This oil on Canvas has a lot of hidden clues through out the painting, and only the artist could find them all. This painting has two sides, to me it looks as if one is a good side and the other is a bad side. Both sides have beautiful colors except the bad sides colors are just a little darker than the good side. There are two sets of clothes, one on each side ready for some individual to choose. On the good side it almost looks as if it is raising it's hand to be chosen. The hand I am referring to is an arm made of leaves with a yellow work glove as the hand. The good side you can almost see that it has been chosen because the set of clothes have a blurred out area above the collar that looks like a head. On the other hand the bad side as well has a head like figure which is outlined by a strand of Christmas lights, but the only thing that makes this side look evil is the way the lights look like they are choking all life out of the invisible head.

The fourth piece of art is called An Angry Sea, by Thomas Moran. The title of this piece fits it very well. With out looking at the title that is exactly what I thought of the painting. Even the colors of this painting give a since of anger. The waves and the clouds give a since of a sky full of furious moving clouds and a sea full of large life taking waves. The one piece of life in the whole painting looks as if it to is fixing to be taken by the angry sea. The light from the moon focuses on the one piece of life.

The next museum I went to was Philbrook. After going to Gilcrease first and being let down I did not let Philbrook's magnificent entrance faze me, but once inside I realized my visit was going to be completely different. This visit was not a waste of my time and was rather interesting. Art in this museum were light well which gave this museum a feeling of life. Philbrook had many pieces I liked, but I narrowed it down to my six favorite.

The second work of art I will discuss will be an oil on canvas by Nicolai Fechin titled Still Life With Calla Lilies. This is a very busy painting with its flowers going every which way to the background that
