Lord of the Flies Essay

Evil is a very destructive trait and it is said that a person cannot even walk down a street without seeing evil or cruel actions taking place. Lord of the Flies is a great novel that teaches readers a lot about evil and human nature. The novel is written by the superb Nobel Prize winning author William Golding. It is about a group of young boys who get stuck on an uninhabited island far from civilization and turn into savages. Through Golding's writing, he conveys his opinion to the reader that everyone has a beast inside of them which represents evil. As time progresses, away from civilization, the characters in the novel demonstrate more evil. According to Golding, everyone has the beast inside of them, but it reveals itself more in some characters more than others. Throughout the novel the beast reveals itself to a small degree in Ralph, a little more in Jack, and mostly in Roger.

In the novel Ralph resembles a very idealistic character, but the beast reveals itself in him to a small degree. When Jack and the hunters involve themselves in the chase for a pig, Ralph also gets into the mood for the hunt. The pig gets away though, so the boys turn on Robert. While Ralph is taking his turn beating on Rober

Everyone has a natural tendency to be evil and exhibit beastly behaviour. If any character in Lord of the Flies is analyzed it will be concluded that they each have at least some evil; however, the evil revealed in some characters exists in a larger degree than in others. Ralph reveals a fairly small amount of beast in his character, Jack exhibits a larger amount of beast in his, and Roger reveals by far the most beastly behavior of all the boys on the island. People are either good at controlling the beast inside them or it dominates their behaviour sometimes even to the point of destruction. Evil is the main human trait that negatively affects our society and if humans cannot control this beast inside of them then the responsible society we live in will be put in jeopardy.

Even though the beast displays itself in Ralph and Jack, the way the beast displays itself in them is not nearly as cruel as in Roger. Roger can be called a sadist and a savage from the things he does. One day after Roger and Maurice get off fire duty they run out onto the beach. As they are running they see some of the younger boys having fun and building sand castles. "Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, and scattering the stones" (62). Roger has absolutely no respect for others, their possessions, or their creations. Furthermore, while Roger and the other hunters are out hunting they come across a sow and instead of leaving it and hunting for other pigs, they go after it and when they catch the sow "Roger found the lodgment for his point and began to push till he was leaning with his whole weight. The spear moved inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high pitched scream" (149). Unlike Jack who just talked of the blood and how fun it is to kill the pigs, Roger goes to the extent of horribly torturing the sow which is almost ready to have piglets. Later in the novel when Roger is on guard duty at Castle Rock, Piggy comes to retr
