The Dispute of Homosexuality
Homosexuality has been a source of constant conflict among many organizations of today's society. Perhaps the most prominent disputes of this issue exist within the disagreement of same sex relationships from the views of society, homosexuals, the Christian church, and scientist's biological theories. Society's view is that homosexuals influence others; therefore, it is a chosen lifestyle. Most homosexuals believe they were born with a homosexual gene and they did not choose this lifestyle for themselves. The Christian church teaches that "homosexuality" is not God's design for people, but believes there are ways of changing. Several scientific theories show no observations of a homosexual gene, but believe there could be certain happenings in one's life that could change one's sex subconsciously. Though society is a vast majority, this does not assure that its beliefs are right. In any event, society does play a major role in a homosexual's life. The view is that homosexuality is something that one does and is a chosen "lifestyle," which can be influenced by others. People say that it is not inherited but caused by poor parenting skills. If a child is unable to form a loving relationship with the parent of the same gender,
In a further research on this subject, Michael Bailey, a psychologist, and Richard Pillard, a psychiatrist, studied the rates of homosexuality in identical and non-identical twin brothers of gay men, as well as adoptive brothers. Their studies have shown that 52 percent of the identical twin brothers were gay, as opposed to 22 percent of non-identical twins, and only 11 percent of the adoptive brothers who were genetically unrelated, were gay as well. If homosexuality is a genetic trait, the identical twin brothers should share the same sexuality since the genes in twins are identical (Bailey 1). the child would take this incompleteness into adulthood, where he would seek love from another adult of the same gender. The result would then be homosexual activity (Tatchell 1). A different theory, promoted by Dr. Gunter Doerner of East Germany, is that sexual orientation can be determined by exposure to specific hormones before birth. A person's gender is determined at conception. But it is only about the sixth week of pregnancy that the fetus starts to develop either female ovaries or male testicles. The theory is that hormones produced by the developing testes might be produced off schedule and cause the brain's neural networks to develop in such a way that the child will exhibit homosexual indicators in early childhood, and therefore, he will mature into a gay male. Lab experiments on rats and monkeys have proven that this sequence happens in other species (Chosen 7). On the other hand, the majority of gays and lesbians believe that homosexuality is genetically predetermined and has something to do with an unknown environmental factor in early childhood. They believe that homosexuality is something that one is, and it is an unchosen fixed "orientation." Once this sexuality is established, the homosexual feelings are unchangeable. No matter what kind of treatment one might undergo, if the person does not want to change, they wont (Chosen 2). An additional reason homosexuals say they are born gay is to use it as a defense against society. When people criticize gays and lesbians by call them names and asking why they are 'the way they are', the normal answer is, "Because I was born this way." Homosexuals say this to calm down society and exclude society's criticism from their lives. When asked if they conv
