In Guy de Maupassant's story, "The Necklace" the main character Madame Mathilde Loisel wants to have more than what she can afford. She borrows her friend Madame Forestier's necklace to go to a ball and later loses it. So Madame Loisel works herself haggard to buy a similar necklace to replace the original. However life is full of irony and at the end of the story she realizes that the necklace she borrowed was fake. Because of her greed and dishonesty she spends ten years of her life trying to pay for the necklace she lost.
Even though Madame Loisel has a humble and understanding husband she is not happy because she wants more than what she can afford. Her husband is a "little clerk" at the Ministry of Public Instruction. Therefore he cannot give her a life of luxury, but he loves her so much that he always tries to please her. For exa

Instead of telling the truth to her friend about losing her necklace, she dices to tell her that the necklace is being repaired. To get the money to replace her friend's necklace, her husband uses the money that "his father had left him" and borrows the rest. This error of not telling the truth put them heavily into debt. Consequently they spend ten long years of hard work and effort to pay their debt.
As a result of her greed and her dishonesty, they suffer several consequences: they move to another house, she start working, and realizes that is hard to take care of the kitchen duties, wash dirty cloth and now she is very careful of not spending more money that what she can spend.
