The Outsiders
In the novel, The Outsiders, events are depicted with great detail by the author but in film those events are somewhat lost on the screen in at least five instances. The first instance is revealed in that the story from the novel is told in first person from Ponyboy’s perception, in the movie you do not know that he is telling the entire story. A good example of this is in the first sentence of the book when it starts with “When I,” this allows the reader to know that someone is explaining from his or her point of view. An additional difference when reading the novel is reflected in the fact that the reader must use his or her own imagination to envision the story. An example of this would be when Ponyboy is reading the poem by Robert Frost. Here the reader has to imagine the sunset where in the movie the sunset reflects the words within the poem. The third difference would be that in a movie you lose sensory detail. This loss of sensory detail is illustrated when Ponyboy talks about getting into a situation with the Socs and he is explaining how he “could smell English Leather shaving lotion and stale tobacco.” In a movie unless they disc
