The Paladin

A detailed Summary of The Paladin

I knew I was dead. I watched as the cloud of black rose petals slowly floated towards the street below, disappearing into the shadows. That was the sign of the champion that I had used as a role model throughout my life, but now the Paladin is initiating a duel with me. Why would the Paladin want to kill me for, I hadn't broken any rules of engagement or assassin's mutual etiquette. I swore at myself, of all the days that I wouldn't be carrying a weapon, it had to be today. I had no chance against his superior fighting skills, precise aim and stealth. Even if I had a weapon, it would only delay the inevitable, now that he was after me.

A bullet whizzed past my head. It came from the roof of the building opposite so I dived behind a roof air conditioning unit, assuming it was safe. Another 2 bullets sped past my ears after piecing through the air conditioner. There was a set of fire escape stairs 5 metres from the area where I was crouching. I just hope that I can survive it before I get out of sight of the Paladin. I took a giant leap and rolled towards the stairs, got back on my feet and instantly ran down the stai

I reached ground level and just as I started to run, I saw my enemy jump off the side of the building opposite. The steel cable whined as the Paladin used it to slow his fall as he approached the ground. He ripped a cord and the cable detached from under his trench coat. The shadowed figure walked towards me with his weapon pointed to the ground. He knew that I was unarmed as he didn't receive any retaliation when we were on the roof.

Paladin walked over and gave me a hand and instantly started walking away with his back to us and his trench coat fluttering in the silent gust. Suddenly my opponent regained consciousness, flicked his wrist, a spring loaded Baretta shot forward from his sleeve into his hand. I was still in shock and couldn't warn the Paladin. The Paladin heard it though, stopping in his tracks, still facing the other direction. A large crack was heard. A bullet pierced the back of his trench coat and travelled through the skull of the enemy lying on the ground next to me. I looked at the black rose, still lying on the ground next to the body. The Paladin said in a deep monotonous voice, 'He has paid',
