Education and Economics

There has been a great deal of discussion that centers on education of our youth and the relationship of the education and related employment to the overall economic well-being of the country. This discussion also extends to global business and the economic crisis that evolves from inadequate education. Some of this discussion relates to the sociological interaction between the schools colleges and businesses that employ the graduating students. Other aspects of research and assessment in this field have focused on a more practical approach to be education of students. This practical approach would better meet the needs of employers. One of the single and most significant faults in the system of education on the students is that our young people are not educated in the real-life needs that the business world seeks as it employees more people. This failing in a practical education is leading to an economic crisis in the labor market today.

In Germany and Japan major businesses have become actively involved with the local schools and colleges. Through this involvement, the business organizations have spent a great deal of effort to define these skills that they seek when hiring employees. This may appear on the surface to be a wonderful exercise in social engineering. However, the businesses in these countries learned quickly that if the educational institutions can produce graduates with the knowledge and skills to quickly integrate into the workforce in a productive manner, then the business receive a significant benefit to their economic bottom line. The effort spent with the educational institutions is a small cost to the businesses when compared to money spent on training an employee when they start work.

Economic conditions within today's world are far from stagnant. Global markets are reaching out to all corners of the world and advances in technology are accelerating this movement to an almost instantaneous frenzy. As a result, the needs of business in manufacturing, management, and scientific fields are in a state of perpetual flux. Businesses today are seeking new employees that can demonstrate a practical approach to problem solving. They are also seeking the less tangible academic skills that allow the new employee to interface in a social and supportive manner within the organization. Some new employees come into businesses with a high academic record but totally lacking the fundamental social skills to fit into an operating and functioning business. Not only does a lack of interactive personal skills have a significant impact on other employees within the business but also has a dramatic impact on productivity and business client relationships. This impact can very quickly lead to loss of contracts and productive work that results in a decline in the business.

The key to integrating business into the educational system requires several steps. First, career counselors need through training in career opportunities available in local, regional, national, and international arenas. With such training, the counselors will have a better understanding of the full range of opportunities for graduating students. Second, the educational system, threw counselors and lecturers, must pro active in reaching out to businesses in an effort to better define their needs. Understanding what is lacking in there existing training programs will provide a foundation to build a new educational framework that provides better focus to actual workplace conditio
