Character Analysis - Tybalt - Romoe and Juliet
Tybalt is a character from the play, "Romeo and Juliet". Tybalt comes off as a thickheaded, cold-blooded killer. But once past his rough exterior, he can be thought of as a sensitive guy. Tybalt tries keeps the intentions of his family first but sometimes he can let his temper get the best of him. His character developed quite fast even though he died halfway through the play. Tybalt is powered by the hate his family, the Capulets, have for the Montagues. This hate comes from the ongoing rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets. Because of this hate, he acted out violently against them many different times. On each of these occasions he always pulled his sword. Tybalt would do anything to start a fight with them because of the rivalry. It was expected of a Montague to hate a Capulet and vice versa. Tybalt was just following what each family had done in the past generations. On one occasion, Tybalt tries to protect the honor of his family and show his hate for the Montagues. One example of this happened at the beginning of the play. He enters into a quarrel between two of the Capulet's servants and Benvolio. Tybalt, of course, drew his sword and tried to pick a fight with Benvolio
Tybalt is much more than just a non-educated killer. He is willing to put his life on the line for the honor of this family. Although Tybalt's obedience to the family's tradition was considered honorable at the time, it caused the feud to erupt past just the family and into secondary relationships like what happened with Mercutio. Because of this courage and family loyalty, it shows that there is a deeper part of him behind his thug-like exterior. He wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed was right which shows a strong sense of courage. Tybalt also lets his temper get the best of him. One example was when he kills Mercutio. Tybalt has a raging temper and a thirst to kill anyone of the opposite family or friend in that matter. Tybalt was out to kill and he succeeded in doing so. As stated in the book, Tybalt was out for Romeo but Mercutio got on his nerves while they were there. When he did kill Mercutio, he realized he had just killed someone of the Prince's family and fled from the scene. This is a great example of his horrible temper.
