The Theme of this story is growing up in America and the changes we go through as we go from childhood to adulthood to old age.This story takes place in America beginning in the 1940's and ending in America in the 1990's. The story begins in Elmwood Springs, Missouri and ends in Vero Beach, Florida. Neighbor Dorothy- she is the wife of "Doc" Smith. She has two children, Anna Lee and Bobby. She is a radio personality. "Doc Smith"- He is the husband of "Neighbor Dorothy". He is the town's pharmacists. Bobby Smith- He is the son of "Neighbor Dorothy" and "Doc" Smith. Monroe Newberry: He is Bobby's best friend. Anna Lee- she is "Neighbor Dorothy" and "Doc" Smith's daughter. Mother Smith- She is "Doc" Smith's mother and plays the organ for the "Neighbor Dorothy" radio show. Charlie Fowler- He is a poultry inspector who makes friends with the Smith family. Beatrice "The Little Blind Songbird"- She sings on the "Neighbor Dorothy" show. Norma Jenkins- She is Anna Lee's best friend. Macky Warren- He is Norma Jenkin's child hood sweetheart.
There are many conflicts in this story. Each character from "Neighbor Dorothy" to "Poor Tot" experience conflicts in their life. However, the major conflict in this story develops around Betty Raye Oatman and Hamm Sparks. "Poor Tot"- She is the local hair dresser who is married to the town drunk. Vita Green- She is a well-known cultural leader in Kansas City and catches the eye of Hamm Sparks.
