Abortion: Right to choose
In 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the Roe v Wade case that "abortion throughout the duration of pregnancy is legally permissible" (Partial Birth 1). Even though the Supreme Court ruled that abortion is legal there are still many who feel that this type of action is unjust and immoral. Pro-life supporters believe it is wrong to take the life of an unborn baby. They feel that the life of the baby should be protected and abortions should be banned. Some are opposed to abortion and feel that it should be made illegal because it is wrongful to take a human life. Some feel that they have to live up to the moral answer. Others are disturbed by the fact that there is one abortion for every two births (prochoice.com). However, there many people who feel that the mother has the choice of life. These pro-choice followers believe that that the mother has the right to choose what she does to her body and her unborn child. In order to choose which side you completely support one must ask several questions. Who decides whether abortion is viable option, and are there other options than abortion? What are the circumstances behind this pregnancy? How will this affect my life?
Furthermore, everyday every person loses skin cells. These skin cells are similar in structure and genetic makeup to the cells of a zygote. I feel there is little reason for such controversy when having an abortion during the first trimester is similar to scratching cells from the surface of the skin. During the second trimester the zygote turns into a fetus. This fetus still relies heavily on the mother for life. It depends on the mother so much that it may cause serious health complications. In this case the mother may require an abortion. Pointedly singling out elected Catholic officials, the Bishops affirmed that "Catholics who are privileged to serve in public leadership positions have an obligation to place their faith at the heart of their public service, particularly on issues regarding the sanctity and dignity of human life." They then declared: "We urge those Catholic officials who choose to depart from Church teaching on the inviolability of human life in their public life to consider the consequences for their own spiritual well-being, as well as the scandal they risk by leading others into serious sin. We call on them to reflect on the grave contradiction of assuming public office and presenting themselves as credible Catholics when their actions on fundamental issues of human life are not in agreement with Church teaching." Concluding this passage they then solemnly proclaimed: "No public official, especially one claiming to be a faithful and serious Catholic, can reasonably advocate for or actively support direct attacks on innocent human life.... no appeal to policy, procedure, majority will or pluralism ever excuses a public official from defending life to the greatest extent possible."
