A detailed Summary of "Encounter Schoolies" Held in Victor Harbor

For this summative task we were asked to chose a special event that is held regularly on the South Coast and examine and describe the range of economic impacts this event has on the local community. The event that I chose is "Encounter Schoolies Week" in Victor Harbor on the 22nd to the 27th of November. In order for me to get information, I conducted a number of surveys with local businesses to find out how their business is affected by Schoolies.

Encounter Schoolies is a 5-day festival. From the 22nd to the 27th of November 2002, thousands of year 12's will come to Victor Harbor to party and relax after they have finally finished school. It is a celebration that attracts hundreds of students from all over South Australia. Encounter Schoolies is run and organised by volunteer and church Encounter Schoolies. These people are the ones responsible for supplying the entertainment and activities available to the Schoolies students. The Big Tent is open five nights from Friday to Wednesday. The tent is considered one of the main homes for the Encounter Schoolies celebrations. The tent is located on Warland Reserve, across from the Crown Hotel. The tent also provides a 24-hour Cafe with free tea, coffee and water, as well as loads o

In my surveys I asked whether businesses where changing their trading hours or whether they were keeping them the same. As a result I found that only one half of businesses increased their trading hours while other kept them the same. The hotels and pubs like The Crown Hotel and The Hotel Victor are not allowed to stay open any later than 4am by law. The BP petrol station admits "We are going to try and make the most of Schoolies this year, she says they will be opening 24 hours for that whole week." (Says the owner of BP Petrol Station.)

Holding such an event as the Encounter Schoolies has its benefits, it allows Victor Harbor to be promoted across the state, it brings new money into the town, this will mean it will bring money into our local economy. I conducted some surveys with a variety of different businesses including food and beverage outlets, entertainment venues, accommodation places, fast food outlets, a petrol station, and supermarkets to get a valid response from businesses owners how they are affected by the Encounter Schoolies celebrations and what are the economic benefits. In my survey responses I found that most of the businesses were a lot busier during the Schoolies week, however businesses like the Professional Real Estate Agents, The Victor Harbor Caravan Park and the Colonial Inn are not busier at all. The Victor Harbor Caravan Park and the Colonial Inn just will not allow Schoolies to stay on their premises. This is because in the previous years when they did they found that the property was being damaged, and they were too loud.

In conclusion, I think that Encounter Schoolies is a well organised ands managed event that has proven to be a success for the schoolies, and many of the local businesses in the area benefit greatly from it. I think that over the years it management and organisation of this event has improved
