Modern American animation has this nicer, cleaner quality because of the time spent on it and a high budget. This has all been made possible because of one name in particular, Walt Disney. When Walt Disney came on to the animation scene he brought magic to the television and to the silver screen. There are plenty of other names that had an extraordinary effect on the American style of animation, but Disney put the final touches on it. It could be said that he is responsible in making cartoons as popular as it is now. When his first motion picture Snow White and the Seven Dwarves premiered in 1937, the history of animation was changed forever. This movie set the standards for the American style of animation. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves appeared as a cartoon, but gave off a very life-like, natural feel to it. Though one would never a dwarf walking around, Snow White was a very humanly proportioned, and looking character.

Modern Japanese animation, or Anime, is very easily distinguished from American. Anime has a very jagged, sharp, quickness to it. Unlike Americans, the Japanese create their animations in a much faster production period and with not as much money to spend. They are able to create a couple of full-length pictures in the time that Americans could create one. An excellent example of Japanese animation is the hit cartoon series, and movie, Pokemon. The style is drastically different from American. When viewing an anime picture one would see the quick, sharp sketch lines, unlike the American carefully curved lines. Because of the use of straight lines, the attention to detail is much less than American animators. This allows for easier transitions and tweens between scenes and regular joint movements of legs and arms. Although, with these jagged lines, the appearance of the characters is very stiff and not as elastic as American characters. Facial features of anime characters do not have as many options as American does. They are unable to show drastic smiles and frowns because of the style. They do not have as much of a range of emotions or slight tweaks of the face that show emotions, such as wrinkles. It is very basic. The eyes of anime characters are very large compared to those of American characters. The heads are enlarged and the faces are flattened. Other distinct feature of Japanese characters is the spiked thick hair. The hair does not flow like those of American style. The Japanese use a technique that Americans rarely ever, if ever, use.
