Colors In The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is rich in symbolism. Several different levels in a variety of ways portray this. One of the most important examples of symbolism shown in this novel is color. It is worked into the plot and structure in a way that hides it. There are several colors used for symbolism in the novel such as green, yellow, white, blue and many others. Fitzgerald uses color in order to better explain the characters and to deepen the understanding of the American dream.

There is a lot of color symbolism in this novel, but there is one that stands out more then the others. The color green influences the story greatly. Green is the color used to describe the main character of the novel, Jay Gatsby. It can also be seen as the color of promise, hope, and renewal. Green represents the hopes and dreams of people trying to reach the American dream. Since green is the color of money it is often used to show the wealth of Gatsby. When the people in West Egg and East Egg talk about Gatsby’s mansion, green is always mentioned. “A large green lawn” surrounds his house and “green ivy” grows on his house.
