Stereotyping Black Students on White Campuses
This purposed study about stereotypes as relative to racism allow society to Better understand, how black students cope with stereotypical judgments about their pre conceived notions of their intelligence or their ability to succeed in college. Stereotypes are defined as overgeneralizations about the appearance, behavior, or other characteristics of members of particular categories (“Sociology in Our Times”306). The African Americans are the members of such a particular category known as the minorities to the predominantly white institution. In order to understand what they go through this study “Facing Stereotypes: A case study of black students on a white campus” was conducted. It consisted of focus groups and selected individual interviews with fifteen academically successful black students who talked about what and how they deal with stereotyping among their ethic group. Stereotyping can be either positive or negative however, in this situation the blacks are being stereotyped of negative expectations and perceived as intellectually inferior.
