No symbol is more potent than the computer in society today. Information technologies in general, and computing in particular, are widely understood as key engines of social change, driving the inexorable transition from the world as it was to the one that is emerging. A conviction that computerised ways of doing things are vastly more efficient--quicker, more powerful and authoritative, more cost-effective--than their conventional counterparts leads me to believe that Information Technology has improved Society.The claim has Information Technology improved Society however is a highly debatable one. Firstly, has it improved society or not? Secondly you have to define different parts of the claim. What does “improved” really mean? Can you define “improved” as ‘changes that give more efficiency’ or is it ‘to raise to a more desirable or more excellent quality or condition – in other words make things better.
