Improved Society

No symbol is more potent than the computer in society today. Information technologies in general, and computing in particular, are widely understood as key engines of social change, driving the inexorable transition from the world as it was to the one that is emerging. A conviction that computerised ways of doing things are vastly more efficient--quicker, more powerful and authoritative, more cost-effective--than their conventional counterparts leads me to believe that Information Technology has improved Society.

The claim has Information Technology improved Society however is a highly debatable one. Firstly, has it improved society or not? Secondly you have to define different parts of the claim. What does "improved" really mean? Can you define "improved" as 'changes that give more efficiency' or is it 'to raise to a more desirable or more excellent quality or condition - in other words make things better. Then you need to quantify Society - are we talking the world as a whole Society or a specific sector of Society, or Society as a community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, cultures, collective activities and interests.

Many industries around the world however, have produced products that are in use globally, many of which have improved Society (remember that improved for the purposes of this essay means changes that give more efficiency). Telecommunications plays an integral part in society today. The world won't stop spinning without it, but businesses would possibly start to slowly grind to a halt without it. The possibility of telephone exchanges crashing is a major downside to improving efficiency in society. The loss of even 5 minutes airtime can costs companies millions of dollars and is certainly not very efficient.

A little closer to home now, with the first Noel Lemming store to be opened online.
