New World Order
In the book Lord Of The Flies by William Golding shows us as the reader how rules, laws, and other regulations are all forgotten that human nature will revert to a primitive state of being. The overriding theme of the novel is the conflict between two competing impulses that exist within each human being: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group on the one hand; and the instinct to gratify ones desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one's will on the other. Through the symbols Golding is able to show the struggle of power, and the struggle of trying to stay civilized. In the beginning Piggy is able to find a conch shell and gives it to Ralph to be able to gather everyone on the island together. As a result, the conch shell becomes a powerful symbol of civilization and order in the boy's lives. The conch shell is used to govern the boys meetings: whoever holds the shell is given the right to speak, making the shell more then a symbol; it is an actual vessel of political legitimacy and democratic power. As the islands civilization starts to diminish and savagery begins to dominate the boys, the conch shell loses its
Piggy is the most intelligent, rational boy in the group. Golding uses Piggy's glasses to represent the power of science and intellectual endeavor in society. This is demonstrated when the boys use the glasses to intensify the sunlight through the lenses and be able to produce their fire for their signal. When jack separates from Ralph's group and forms his tribe jack knows that with out Piggy's glasses he is powerless. Jack represents the savagery and desire for power. Golding is able to show us how Jack is needs power buy having him go out and raid Ralph's camp and steal the glasses. When the tribe steals the glasses from Piggy they have also taken the power to make fire, and leave Ralph's civilization helpless. Golding is able to show us how power has affected the boys through the symbolism of Piggy's glasses. Jacks need for power shows how Jack has become from civilized to Savage and this is what Golding wanted us to see the struggle for power between the civilized and the savages. The "beastie" is one of the most import symbols used in the book by Golding. The symbol of the "beastie" stands for the primal instinct of savagery that exists within all human kind. The only person that is able to see why the kinds are afraid of the "beastie" is Simon. He is able to realize that they fear the "beastie" because it exists within each of them. As the boys become less civilized and more savage, their belief in the "beastie" grows stronger and more pronounced. Th
