Gun Control
Gun control is defined as an attempt to reduce violence caused by use of firearms, by regulating their ownership and use. I agree that some type of gun control is needed, but I do not agree with all of it. I do agree with the one law that is currently used by the Federal government and all fifty states. The background check is a computerized system managed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that keeps certain types of people from owning firearms. This system checks the buyer's criminal record, and will not sell that person a gun if he or she has a felony record. Federal and state laws also keep firearms out of the hands of people who are at high risk, such as people with mental illness, or people with a history of domestic violence. Many people feel we should destroy all guns. I strongly disagree with these people. They believe destroying all guns will lower violence and crime. I believe it will only hurt honest people. Violent people are violent by nature, if they want to kill someone, they would do it with or without the help of a gun. We live in a violent socie
One myth I disagree with is the myth that more gun laws mean less crime. Washington D.C. has the strictest gun laws in the United States and still has the highest crime rate. If we enforce the laws that already exist, I believe that would be very effective. Repeat offenders commit most crimes of gun homicide or gun violence. In state facilities, ninety percent of felons convicted for weapons offences have prior convictions and forty-four percent of offenders have prior convictions of violent crimes. In federal facilities, seventy-five percent of felons convicted of weapons offences had prior convictions. Twenty-six percent of convicted felons have prior convictions for violent crimes. My feelings are that the media mainly causes this. A majority of the media is anti-gun, and uses their influence on some people. Of six hundred and fifty three gun related stories last year, three hundred fifty-seven, or fifty-five percent were anti gun. Only thirty-six stories, or five percent were pro-gun. Two hundred sixty stories, or forty percent were neutral. It seems the media only wants to report gun deaths; the media hardly ever
