A detailed Summary of Comparing Apples and Oranges


"You're comparing apples to oranges," might find its way into a conversation where someone has attempted to equate two different topics. Some people may think about the choice phrase and might come up with many similarities between the two fruits: they both have skin and a stem, they both grow on trees, they both come in many different varieties, they both taste sweet, and they both come in liquid form. Not totally satisfied with my comparisons, I decided to examine the fruits more closely to try to come up with more similarities or differences to determine the appropriateness of the saying.

Outwardly, an apple appears quite different than an orange. Although some apples appear more spherical than others do, the basic shape seems like an inverted cone; the top has a slightly larger circumference than the bottom. The apple is quite firm, but if too much pressure is applied to its surface, a dent occurs, caus


Examining the apple and the orange even more closely will reveal the intricate details that make the two fruits even more unalike. The bare apple slice is moist and solid. Its texture feels rough, almost like fine sandpaper. A very close look would expose the granular appearance of the apple, nearly resembling the sparkling surface of a sugar cube. Thin, vein-like lines seem to randomly appear throughout the fruit. The individual sections of the orange are dry and squishy. A vein-like network of lines also runs throughout these sections. Once the thin layer of skin encasing the separate sections is broken, the juice of the orange freely flows out.

Although people have found apples and oranges have some common features, their differences far outweigh their similarities. Comparing both the outer and inner appearances of apples to oranges, from a glance and up close, has proven, beyond doubt, that
