A detailed Summary of Lyme Disease


The Bacteria that causes Lyme disease is called Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the bite of ticks. Not all types of ticks carries the bacteria that causes the disease, In the Eastern United States the deer tick is mainly responsible, but in the Western United States the black-legged tick is the dominate carrier. Once infected with the disease it affects the skin, heart, nerves and joints.

The diagnosis of Lyme disease is based on the symptoms, the infected person's history and their blood test results. There are three stages of Lyme disease in which doctors diagnose upon the infected. The first stage is called the early Lyme stage; in this stage the person will experience fatigue, Chills and fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes and Erythema migraines. These symptoms usually occur within days or weeks of t


sleeping. However these symptoms only have effect on those never received treatment or if the treatment did not kill the bacteria.

Using blood tests is another way doctors are able to detect lyme disease, although blood tests can't diagnose it own it's own it is used to confirm it. The most common blood test used is the Elisa, which tests for antibodies, which are the bodies defense system against an infection. The test may not work at times because the anti-borrelia burgdorferi antibodies may not appear in the blood until about 2 to 6 weeks after the infection. Serologic testing is the last way to detect for Lyme disease; it is more efficient than the Elisa test, because it measures the IgM and IgG levels of the body. However serology still has its flaws.
