We have selected "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" and Cinderella, and will compare and contrast the differences and similarities between them. These two stories have many similarities: both of the persecuted heroines have the same kind of life style; they both suffer from the inequalities, which exist in their families. They are both abused, they are both young females and also both have lost their parents.
Mabel is living with her tree brothers, and their parents are both dead. She really loved her mom and after her death, Mabel's life became miserable. Her three brothers didn't really like her; therefore she had no other choice but to work. Her brothers treated her like a maid, not as a sister: " They had talked at her and round her for so many years"(D.H. Lawrence. The Horse Dealer's Daughter. p.399) Living in a small town was even worse, because she couldn't have any friends.
Cinderella on the other hand, wasn't in any better a situation than Mabel. Cinderella's father married another women after the death of his wife. "Nobleman who took as his second wife the proudest and naughtiest women imaginable." (Perrault, Charles. "Cinderella." writing and reading across the
Mabel's proof of identity is, a very strange and interesting interpretation by the author, the smell of the swamp. There could be two interesting reason to this. First, a swamp resembles the end of the line for Mabel; it is there that she wants to commit suicide, and also its there that she meets the doctor for the third time. He risked his life in order to save Mabel's life. "He grasped her clothing, and drawing her nearer, turned to take his way to land again. (D.H. Lawrence. The Horse Dealer's Daughter. p.405) To Mabel, the doctor was a rescuer who saved her, to show her a better and happier life. Second, the reason for smell of swamp to be the proof of identity is that when at the end Mabel's became aware that the doctor loved her, and they were so attached hugging each other; but suddenly after that the doctor noticed the smell of swamp, she noticed the smell of swamp and becomes disgusted and thinks that, the doctor is not telling the truth and he really doesn't love him."... And my hair smells so horrible, ..., and I'm so awful, oh, no, I'm too awful, and she broke into bitter, you can't love me, I'm horrible" (D.H. Lawrence. The Horse Dealer's Daughter. p.409) But he gave her the trust and confidence that she really needed. He told her: "No, I want you, I want you." (D.H. Lawrence. The Horse Dealer's Daughter. p.409)
curriculum. p.598) After the death of her father, Cinderella's life became miserable. Her stepmother was cruel and unfair to her. Cinderella had to take care of the chores and her abusive stepsisters.
Cinderella however had a different kind of magic help. One day. The king invited everyone in the town to his palace to celebrate the return of the prince. Cinderella was thrilled by the idea of going to the palace, but because of her natural beauty and her sweet nature her stepmother and stepsister didn't let her come along. She did everything she could so they would let her come, but they were so cruel. Cinderella was just so broken-hearted and disappointed that she didn't know what to do. There was nothing in her power to do. It was at the very same time, that
