The Andromeda Strain
The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton was about a deadly virus that spread in the city of Piedmont, Arizona. The Scoop VII was launched to collect organisms and bring them back to the surface. After orbiting for two and a half days, the satellite left the orbit and was tracked to have landed in the northeastern area Arizona (Piedmont). A van was tracking the location with two men in it, and all of a sudden they had lost contact with their station at Vandenberg. Actually, the communications were still working, but something had happened to the two men, Shawn and Crane. They had reported that Piedmont had a deserted feeling, and there were bodies everywhere in the streets, but were not certain if they were dead. After reporting this, one of the men screamed and the radio was just left with static. Major Manchek who was the chief duty officer of the month, was in charge of what to do if an instance like that was to happen. He investigated it a little more, and everything seemed too strange and suspicious. Manchek decided to alert the Division 222, Project Wildfire on a possibility of extraterrestrial lifeform encounters. The government then notified the scientists that were a part of the Wildfire crew. Wildfire consi
sted of Jeremy Stone, a scientist who was well known for his studies which one him the Nobel Prize. Peter Leavitt who was a clinical microbiologist and was well experienced with the treatments of infectious diseases. Charles Burton, who was a pathologist. He also had a great scientific talent. Christian Kirke was one of the Wildfire crew also, he was an anthropologist and had a very logical brain, but was in the hospital and was unable to come. Then there was Mark Hall, a surgeon, who was the only single man on the mission. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I didn't know if it was going to be that good of a book in the beginning because it was a scientific book, but I did end up liking it. Although I have to admit it was a little confusing in a few parts because I didn't know all the terms in the book. The only part of the book that I didn't like was the ending. I thought it could've been a little better, but a different ending may have stretched the book out too long. I would recommend this book to someone else because I enjoyed it. I thought it had a good plot and overall story. The first two who arrived were Stone and Burton who surveyed. They had to wear special suites like astronauts wear so they would not be killed by whatever was there in Piedmont. They found the whole town dead, and some who had committed suicide, a total of about fifty people. The only two who did survive, was a young infant of two months, and an old aged man in a white robe.
