1. A holocaust is any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life. The most notable holocaust of the 20th century was in Europe prior to and during World War II. 2. The worst holocaust in modern history took place in Nazi Germany. This period of persecution and extermination of European Jews began in 1933, when Adolf Hitler took control of the German government and ended in 1945, when World War II ended. 3. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in a small Austrian village. Adolf was loved and lavished in fear the he to might die, he had other siblings but all of them died, except one, Paula. Adolf's father, Alois, was twice as old as his mother, but they were still quite happy. He needed a strong blue eyed, blond haired, tall race, so that one day he would be able to take over the world. Among the Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, the deformed and other people that did not fit the Aryan requirements fell victim to Hitler's plan. 8. The first organization, under Hitler's regime, that was responsible for arresting innocent people was the German secret police, known as the SS or Schutzstaffel. This organization was originally created to guard Adolph Hitler. The second organization was the Gestapo, also known as the German secret state police. Both organizations had the power to arrest, execute or send to a concentration camp any person who was thought to be disloyal to the government.
