Compare and Contrast Othello Characters
Iago is one of the more interesting characters in Shakespeare's' play "Othello." Iago can be described as an evil, jealous, manipulative and a revenge seeking character. In fact, Iago is so manipulative throughout the entire play that it benefits him, but also causes his wife Emilia, Othello, Desdemona, and Roderigo to die. It is also said that Iago is perhaps the best villain that a character has ever been. In the beginning of the play Iago is extremely jealous and seeking revenge on Michael Cassio and Othello, because of a promotion Iago thought he deserved but didn't get. While Iago remains only as ensign to Othello, Michael Cassio was promoted to lieutenant even though he was ranked under Iago to start with. Even though this incident happens in the very beginning of
Almost immediately after this Othello asks Iago to murder Cassio for what he has done and how Othello should murder his wife. Iago replies that Othello should strangle her, which is exactly what he does. However, before Othello commits suicide, Emilia tells him that Desdemona never cheated on him and that she found out it was all her husbands deceiving lies. Because Emilia did this it costed her, her life and then Othello killed himself because he could not bear the pain. As a result of Iago being as intelligently manipulative, evil, revenge seeking, and jealous, he managed to get Cassio demoted and Othello, Desdemona, and Emilia killed with out any guilt what so ever.
