Dr. Norman Bethune

Personality is what makes us human. Most people when asked, "What is a personality?" will respond that it refers to one's public image and the way people view that particular person. But personality goes deeper than those mediocre definitions. Personality encompasses our childhood and present, our motives and drives, our needs and experiences, it is social and is specifically human. Understanding someone's complex personality is a difficult task and in this essay I will try to unlock Dr. Norman Bethune to try and realize why he did what he did, what is his personality and who influenced Bethune to become the great man that he became. I will use a combination of the various personality theories and take the relevant outlooks which I believe make up Bethune as a person.

In the Freudian tradition personality is linked with the past and significant events that effect an individual during certain stages of their life. Little is known about Bethune's childhood but what is known is significant. Henry Norman Bethune was born on March 3, 1890 in Gravenhurst, Ontario. He was the first son to parents Malcolm and Elizabeth. Malcolm's job (a minister) moved the family frequently to small towns throughout Ontario. Bethune's given na

Bethune has been described by Mao Tse-tung as "the spirit of absolute selflessness." But what motivated Bethune to leave Canada and go to help in Spain and China. Obviously he did not go for biological motives; sex and aggression are far from the reasons that Bethune selflessly sacrificed himself for the well being of others. Bethune displayed altruism at the highest degree. I think that by slowly helping a few people it helps build up the strength to help more and more.

Bethune contacted Tuberculosis and probably would have died if it had not been for his stubborn and forceful character, which persuaded that a new controversial treatment called compression therapy, be used to treat him. At the time there were only 13 doctors in the world experienced in this technique; one was Dr. Archibald who was currently practicing in Montreal. I think Bethune was greatly effected by Dr. Archibald. He respected him and later studied thoracic surgery under him. Dr. Archibald's strength is reflected in Bethune and the fact that Archibald was defiant enough to try new procedures inspired Bethune to stand up for what he believed in.

Bethune was a radical man of action, who believed that when you perceive something as being wrong, the only moral choice is to go and put it right. His name implies energy, conviction, and selfless humanitarianism. I believe that Bethune lives up to his namesake and has become an influential part of my life as well as the profound effect he has on people living around the world.

Bethune's personality traits can are displayed when he was operating one day in the quiet of the operating theater in The Royal Victoria Hospital when he suddenly threw the rip stripper he was using across the room, shouting "Blasted idiocy!" Bethune was not afraid to show his temper and also displayed his power to be defiant and try new things when the norm just doesn't pull it's weight. He drew up some sketches of modified and new surgical instruments that would help and change the way surgery was performed.

Personalisation does not have to be equal. Bethune's relationship with Mao was obviously unequal and another example is the fact that Bethune's personality still has effects on Chinese school chil
