Canada entered World War One as a British Colony, and left it with an enlightened sense of nationalism that would eventually lead to demise of Britain's authority over Canada. The Canadian Army Core, although starting out weak at the beginning of the war, eventually blossomed in a strong force that helped tip the balance of power. While Canada's contributions abroad were well received, at home there was a growing sense of nationalism under the umbrella of the nation Canada, especially among the English-speaking inhabitants. Through a combination of Canada's highly regarded contributions and the steady perseverance of the leaders at the time, the British Empire slowly began to allow Canada to lives of her people more independently, thus increasing the sense of unity as a country. World War One was a crucial turning point for Canada's nationalism as being an entity separate from the control of the British Empire.Canada's military accomplishments were recognized by all; friend and foe. Canada's natural and human resources were called upon extensively during the war. For many of the Allies, the fighting disrupted many of their production industries. The Canadian farming industry, as well as logging, wood and nickel were in high demand throughout the war, due to the fact that Canada was an ocean away from any real conflict. Britain realized that Canada was a different kind of dominion, one that had leaders who were pressing who increased national visibility and more internal control. One of the first of the directly war related precedents was Britain's grant to allow Canada to represent itself at the Paris Peace Conference, at the Treaty of Versailles and at the League of Nations. As well, through the insistence of the Canadian leaders, the members of the Canadian Core were not mixed with the any other of the Allies, signifying to the Canadian troops a message more of fighting for Canada than fighting for Britain. The British Empire recognized Canada was a country that was rapidly trying to find itself as a unique member of the international community. Canada's contributions were not going unacknowledged by Britain. The World War was indeed a worldwide war, but one that very local and personal effects on Canada.
