PEZ

A detailed Summary of PEZ

PEZ and PEZ dispensers can be found in over 60 countries around

the world! This year marks the 50th anniversary of the well-loved candy. The word ?PEZ? derives from the German word ?Phefferminz? which means quite simply, peppermints. They shortened the name to PEZ taking the first, middle, and last letter of the word to simplify it and keep the name easy to remember. Yes, that?s right the original PEZ candies were compressed peppermints, an adult mint made to help quit smoking, and naturally, the first dispenser looked much like a cigarette lighter. A candy man named Edward Haas III first invented them in 1927 in Vienna, Austria. In 1948 they started making PEZ in a new ?easy, hygienic dispenser? that we all recognize today as a regular PEZ dispenser. In 1952 Edward Haas brought his idea to America and did extensive research with his products and the way children had grown attached to them. They then placed heads on the dispensers and marketed them for children.

When talking to a hardcore PEZ collector you might hear abbreviations such as MIB (Mint In Bag), MOC (Mint On Card), MOMC (Mint On Mint Card), or NF (No Feet). These are said because the dispensers are sold in bags or on a cardboard card with plastic around it. If your dispenser is MIB then it is still in the bag and unopened. If it is MOC then it has not been taken off the card. As long as the dispenser is not damaged it is MIB or MOC, the card or bag can be in any shape and still be referred to as this. However, if the dispenser AND the card is in mint condition it is referred to as MOMC, and is worth a lot more money. The final abbreviation is NF because prior to 1987 none of the dispensers had feet.

New dispensers include ones that eject an entire package of PEZ (the giant dispensers), Fuzzy Friends (which are fuzzy teddy bears, cats, dogs, etc.), Crystal dispensers (which are made of clear plastic), and PEZ cars, as well as the traditional cartoon heads.
