John Adams

The only president who was a son of a president was John Quincy Adams. John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829. John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on July 11, 1767 to John and Abigail Adams. He was involved in politics since he was 12 years old. At the age of 12 he was with his father in Europe. While in Europe John was a French translator for Francis Dana, the United States Minister to Russia. He was also his father's secretary and during this time he became an accomplished diarist.

When he came back to the United States he studied law at Harvard College. Upon graduation in 1790 he opened his own law office in Boston. In 1793 George Washington named him minister to Holland and then sent him to London to help John Jay in negotiations with the British. This negotiation was known as Jay's Treaty. Jay's Treaty was one of the major accomplishments for John Quincy. This treaty provided for the evacuation of British posts on the northwestern frontier of the United States to define boundaries between the United States and Canada. The treaty failed to resolve a dispute over American trade with British West Indies, but under the circumstances it was thought

By 1817 John Quincy Adams was back in the United States and was chosen to be President James Monroe's Secretary of State. While he was Secretary of State he forced Spain to surrender Florida and to make a settlement of the Louisiana boundary in the Transcontinental Treaty written in 1819. The acquisition of Florida was one of the most important days in John Quincy's life. This acquisition was very important to the United States since it gave us a boundary to the south seas. While John Quincy Adams was secretary of state James Monroe drafted the Monroe Doctrine. John Quincy was a supporter of the doctrine which separated Europe from America. The Monroe Doctrine has been used throughout the 19th century and even into the 20th century.

John Quincy Adams was a great man. I think he did many things to help society and still some things that help society today. I also believe that John Quincy Adams was a very dedicated and determined hard working man. When John was a kid he traveled to and from Europe learning about politics. Some of the ways most people remember him is that he was the only president who was a son of a president and the only president not to be elected by electoral votes but was elected by the House. John Quincy is known in American History because of the way he was involved in the Jays Treaty, Treaty of Ghent, Monroe Doctrine and the abolishment of the "gag rule." This is why I think John Quincy Adams is a very important person to American History.
