At the end of An Inspector Calls, the characters that looked more sorry for what had happened seemed to be Eric and Sheila. But if we look more inside the story, then we can find out that there are also other characters which are very sorry and sad because of this event.
Let's start with Mr. Birling. He is a rich man who doesn't look as if he cares much about other people. He used to talk about everything he could in order to be the centre of attention but during the inspector's visit, he remained silent because of the pressure he had with the case of Eva Smith. Also, we have Gerald. He was going to get married with Sheila and the whole reunion was because the family wanted to celebrate that. Gerald was also surprised by the inspector, who came in telling him what Gerald has done with Eva Smith. Even though, Gerald didn't seem so sorry about that, but he truly felt that there was an error, or a misunderstanding. He didn't know what was happening and got very scared and angry with the inspector's questions.
Lastly we have Sheila. She is the character that felt the most sorry of all the family. Although she hadn't done much, she knew that what she had done made Eva Smith go one step closer to death. He also feels sorry for her parents and for Gerald, who had done also something bad to Eva.
