Advertisements and De Destruction

In the movie, "Advertising and the end of the world", Sut Jhally talks about how advertising is affecting the world negatively. In the beginning of the movie Jhally talks about advertising as a culture. And how physical and simple things don't apply. Jhally stated that if an anthropologist came from mars and based our culture off of advertisements, they would think that we believe in magic, and that normal doesn't apply to us. Some advertisements even come into our personal lives and change our culture. He gives DeBeers as an example of how they have intruded into our lives.

Later, Jhally talks about how the advertisements show people as being happy if we buy the product. Advertising tells us that the more we buy the happier we are going to be. Jhally gave us some statistics that show our happiness levels and our wealth levels. And our wealth has gone up but our happiness has stayed the same. Jhally then discusses a survey that they did, and asked people what made them happy. More often than not people said social things and not physical things. Social things are like friends, families, autonomy control, romance, self esteem, and relaxation. Physical things are like economic status, and houses. In the mo


Destroying natural resources is one of the main issues of how advertising affects the environment. Products take boxes to ship which takes trees. Then there is the car, truck, or plane to ship it, which in turn takes fuel. So already there are mass amounts of natural resources used just to get it to the consumer. Then there is the whole process of after the product has been used up or is thrown away. In the movie Jhally states that the world won't be able to support us for more than 70 years in the future. He says that we are using resources faster than the earth can replace them.

During the whole movie Jhally points out that the entire marketing culture and all the shipping products are fueled by advertisements. That the advertisements are actually destroying the planet by making people buy more items which in turn costs more natural resources to get it to the consumer. Jhally's solution is to ban advertisements, but since we are in a free country companies can destroy the earth. And since the companies have influence over the media, they don't have to share any of the world destruction information with anyone.

Happiness comes more from social things than material things. I do believe that material things do give you happiness for short periods of time but they can't give you long term happiness like friends or family. Advertising is the exact opposite. Advertisements tell you that if you buy this product you are going to be happy. One o
