Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch is a high-energy company that thrives on providing high quality merchandise to people who enjoy life to the fullest. Abercrombie & Fitch stores are retail stores that are usually in malls, some like Charleston, are in central downtown areas. The stores range in size between four and six rooms. The kid's stores are usually four rooms or are another department in an adult store like Charlotte. The size of the store depends on the volume of the store and the ratings are from A to D with A being the highest volume. There are a total of 491 stores open with an average store size of 7,480 gross square feet. This average makes for a total gross square footage of 3,673,000.

Abercrombie & Fitch is a specialty store with it's own private label. The stores are divided into halves. There are separate departments within each store usually women's or girl's on the left and men's or boy's on the right. Sale merchandise is in the last room on each side. Abercrombie & Fitch is corporate owned and is a chain.

Abercrombie & Fitch has cornered the market and competes with companies like American Eagle, Gap, and J Crew. In recent years, companies like American Eagle have begun remodeling their


There are now three store concepts including Abercrombie & Fitch, Abercrombie, and Hollister the newest brand. The target for 2002 is 130 store openings for Abercrombie and 60 for Hollister. In 2002 the company hopes to exceed the 60% growth of the Internet business that was acquired in 2001. As always Abercrombie and Fitch hopes to continue the tradition of high quality goods, stores, associates, and marketing.

Merchandise is displayed mostly on tables in the stores. There is also use of t-stands and wardrobers. At the home office there is a display store where all of the merchandise is placed and then the planograms are made from the displays. On most of the tables and set up around the store there are forms that are wearing the merchandise so the customers can visually see what the clothing will look like when they are wearing the items.

Eventually Ezra Fitch retired in 1928. The business continued to grow and new stores were opened in San Francisco and Chicago. In 1977 the store went bankrupt and was bought by Oshman's Sporting Goods a company based in Houston, Texas. Business remained challenged and in 1988 The Limited Inc. bought Abercrombie & Fitch. Today, the store has gone public and thrives as not just a brand but also a lifestyle, selling only the best of the best with stores being a place to find excitement and upbeat activity. This concept has been in creation for over one hundred years.

Many great hunting and exploring expeditions were outfitted by A & F including trips to Africa taken by Theodore Roosevelt. Presidents Hoover and Einsenhower bought fishing equipment there. Earnest Hemingway bought guns at A & F. Other famous clients include Clark Gable, the Duke of Windsor, Presidents Kennedy, Taft, and Harding, Katherine Hepburn, Bing Crosby, Greta Garbo, and Howard Hughes.

Management at Abercrombie & Fitch is decentralized. Home office makes all decisions and then passes them on to the regional managers, which then is passed on to the district managers, then to store managers and then to the assistant managers and the MIT's. District managers may inform assistant managers and MIT's during conference calls without the store manager or if they are in the store and the store manager is not there at the time but chances are the store manager already knows the information being passed. Home office sends all of the information being passed in the morning before opening. This information is called Crombie and tells the opening manager what needs to be done for the day (marketing, redlines, etc.).

In 1917 Abercrombie & Fitch made yet another move to Madison Avenue and 45th Street. An entire twelve story building became it's home. It was at this point that Abercrombie & Fitch became the largest sporting goods store in the world. Fitch made sure the customer could try everything in the store.

At Abercrombie & Fitch managers are rigorously trained for promotion to the next step (GM, DM, RM etc.). At the store level managers are being trained for top management and so on. Ages at the store level range anywhere between 17 and somewhere in the mid 20's. Sales associates are hired by walk-ins and recruited off of the sales floor. Abercrombie dedicates themselves to hiring people who would bring a fun attitude and represent the brand well. Individual and group interviews are used to get to know applicants. The chain of command is as follows: Home office, Regional managers, District managers, down to store managers, and then to assistant managers. MIT's and interns fall in between assistant
