Secondly, never once did he give up even when he was certain he was going to die. One of the instances he stared death in the face that made an impression upon me was that of when his foot got really swollen and had to have surgery. Not only did he have such great faith in the surgeon but great faith in himself to be able stay alive. Then being able to get up two days after the surgery and run almost fifty miles on the foot which was in a sad state. That would have to be the most horrific pain you could feel. He could have easily laid down in the snow when they stopped and died but he got up and kept on going. This one act of bravery on the part of Elie Wiesel touched me deeply. As I read this part I could picture a teenager sprinting in deep snow, freezing, and his foot swollen and wrapped in a blood soaked clothe. What an ultimate picture of courage.
