Martin Luther King
Essay from my Oral Presentation: On Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "The Dimensions of a Complete Life." What kind of life can be considered complete? Different people may have different opinions. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his article "The Dimensions of a Complete Life", pointed out that "there are three dimensions of any complete life to which we can fitly give the words of this text: length, breadth, and height" (178). As he explained: "the length of life" is the "inward concern for one's own welfare", while "the breadth of life" is "the outward concern for the welfare of others", and, "the height of life" is "the upward reach for God" (Dimensions 179). The completeness of life defined by Dr. King was embodied in his entire life. Dr. King took it very seriously the development of his "inner power" (the length of life) (Dimensions 179). He loved himself, and kept on "pursuing personal ends and ambitions" (Dimensions 179). In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse College and was ordained to the Baptist Ministry at the age of 19. Three years later, he earned the bachelor divinity degree at Crozer Theological Seminary. In 1955, he was granted Doctorate of Philosophy in Systematic Theology from Boston University and later wa
King, Martin Luther, Jr. "I have a dream." http://web66.coled.umn.edu/new/MLK/MLK.html Dr. King was a Baptist minister. He deeply loved and showed respect to God (height of life). "Without [God] all our efforts turn to ashes and out sunrises into darkest nights. Without [God], life is a meaningless drama with the decisive scenes missing" (Dimensions 182). For Dr. King, "religion is life" (Martin Luther King Day Quotes). He submitted himself to the will of God: he played the pivotal role in the civil rights movement; he advocated racial equality and non-violent resistance; he seized any opportunity for direct assault against injustice and convinced ordinary men and women to persist, to work toward the just and moral future of which he dreamed. Even after the bombing of his home, Dr. King still urged a crowed of angry blacks to remain calm: "we must meet hate with love, because God is with us" (Shuker, 52). Dr. King is a real Christian; he kept on seeking God and discovering God, and getting the strength from the God. If any of you are around when I have to meet my day... Tell them not to mention that I have a Nobel Peace Price, that isn't important. Tell them not to mention that I have three or four hundred other awards, that's not important... I'd like somebody to mention that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I'd like for somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be a
