Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation a sleep disorder shared by millions of Americans of all age groups. So what is sleep deprivation? Sleep deprivation is a sleep disorder caused by lack of needed daily sleep. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, about 40,000,000 Americans suffer from some sort of sleep disorder that causes sleep deprivation. (Deprivation Costly and Dangerous)

Sleep is defined as a period of rest for the body and mind, during which volition and consciousness are in partial and complete abeyance and the bodily functions are partially suspended. (Sleep) When the body is asleep it undergoes two types of sleep; (REM) rapid eye movement sleep and (NREM) non-rapid eye movement sleep. (Sleep) NREM appears to be the restful period of sleep that supports the body's recuperation. This type of sleep is most often needed after long periods of being awake and after a lot of physical activity. (Sleep) REM sleep occurs after the body has been completely recuperated in the NREM state. REM sleep occurs in most cases at the end of the resting period. REM sleep is when dreams occur just before awakening. The average adult

spends seventy-five percent of their sleep in the NREM state and the other twenty-f

Why is America such a sleepy society? Many Americans already know the answer; there is just not enough time in a day. Everyday there seems to be more and more things to do. The average American adult works forty or more hours a week. Their day does not even begin to end at the end of the workday; there are then obligations to go the grocery store, clean house, cook dinner, take care of children and any other activities that need to be completed. Adding another four to five hours a day in to the hectic schedule of life in the year 2002. Children also suffer staying up late to do homework and watching television then having to be up by at least seven am to make it to school on time. Not to mention any other extra curricular activities they might be involved in. Children these days lead lives almost if not more crazy than our own in some cases. College students seem to suffer the most from sleep deprivation of all other groups compared. Students are trying to pull weight from going to school full time and keeping up with the workload and also working full or part time jobs for money. Living this lifestyle can be done but a lot of college students are only sleeping four to five hours per night. John Crawford, coordinator of the sleep disorders clinic at Shand's at AGH, said " people usually need at least eight hours of sleep, and studies show that a majority of college students are sleep deprived," Crawford also went on to say that it is essential for students to get enough sleep because sleep deprivation causes short-term memory loss and, which makes studying and other normal tasks more difficult to complete. (McLeod) Thus explaining the all niters college students pull studying for an exam in the morning, sleeping for three to five hours then going to take the test only to find that it seems they have never read or studied the material before.
