Sleep deprivation a sleep disorder shared by millions of Americans of all age groups. So what is sleep deprivation? Sleep deprivation is a sleep disorder caused by lack of needed daily sleep. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, about 40,000,000 Americans suffer from some sort of sleep disorder that causes sleep deprivation. (Deprivation Costly and Dangerous) Sleep is defined as a period of rest for the body and mind, during which volition and consciousness are in partial and complete abeyance and the bodily functions are partially suspended. (Sleep) When the body is asleep it undergoes two types of sleep; (REM) rapid eye movement sleep and (NREM) non-rapid eye movement sleep. (Sleep) NREM appears to be the restful period of sleep that supports the body’s recuperation. This type of sleep is most often needed after long periods of being awake and after a lot of physical activity. (Sleep) REM sleep occurs after the body has been completely recuperated in the NREM state. REM sleep occurs in most cases at the end of the resting period.
