The sitcom, Friends, has an influential impact on today's society because it shows a positive moral side to life in an entertaining setting. This-half hour show based on the lives of six diverse people, grasps the attention of millions of viewers on a weekly basis. Throughout each episode, viewers join Rachael, Ross, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, and Joey in their everyday lives, and watch as they discuss jobs, relationships, and any other quirky issues they may face. Though some feel the show is immoral and unsophisticated due to the fact that it contains pre-marital sex, and continuous drama, Friends is still considered as "one of the greatest shows of all time" (TV Guide). From teenagers to senior citizens, people of all ages are tuned in every week to watch this humorous sitcom. Although various ages watch Friends, the show mainly pertains to viewers from the mid twenties to mid thirties. Reasons that people between these ages are more apt to watch this particular sitcom are the ages of the characters themselves and the similar issues they encounter. With episodes such as this year's season premiere, some critics feel that these six characters actions are far too immoral to be shown on television. Such things as Ross and Rachael's baby being born out of wedlock, the display of sexual contact in a public place, and unmarried men and women living together are thought to create a negative impact on viewers (Nettles 1). Other controversy has arisen over the fact that children are able to watch the mature scenes of the show due to its airing on primetime television. Issues such as Monica and Chandlers display of sexual intercourse in the broom closet of the hospital are just not acceptable to some. Friends are exactly what this sitcom is based on and that is definitely shown by the compassion the characters share for one another.
