Although the film has a serious tone at first, with very dominant military and political characters and situations, there are many humorous moments. For example the song "The end of the world as we know it" by REM is played and the actor Will Smith automatically presents humour on the screen. Now this shows the theme of defining humanity, through the narrative it shows that as humans in the face of danger we can still find humour.

Three underlying themes include, that one man can make a difference, Russell Casse sacrifices himself to save the world, a very human trait. Also the character himself is a drunken old father, but who flew in the Vietnam War. So this treats the theme slightly differently, for there were many possible characters that could of sacrificed themselves, but the narrative chose the character of Russell Casse because not only can one man make a difference, but any man can make a difference.

Similar to Metropolis, the city in which Bladerunner is set in a society which is controlled by big capitalist corporations. This film contains a strong theme of hypothesing the future, and this futuristic society is a dystopia. Although not every aspect of the film could be considered negative. Even though every replicant is destroyed, apart from Decker's love, the scene where Roy the replicants saves Decker, the human, gives a glimpse of hope.

The way in which Bladerunner's themes are used in the narrative reflects the reason for the actually making of the film, unlike Independence Day this film does not try to increase the patriotism and hope of the audience. If it was then the replicants would be evil and all would be destroyed, the society would not be so dark and no struggling between the social class'. Bladerunner is a warning about how the future could turn out if capitalism and technological advances became the desire to which many people would want to create.

Apart from the main narrative of the alien invasion, there were four sub-narratives, Russell Casse and his family, Will Smith and his family, Jeff Goldbauhm and his family and the President of America and his family. These narratives were put in to give the alien invasion theme some reality and emotional response. The four narratives included characters from different social and ethnic backgrounds and all four interlinked at some time in the film, this presents the theme of both good vs. evil and defining humanity. This basic binary opposition is found in this film, we as the human race, included every race, age and sex, battle against that of which is alien. And being a typical classic realist text, good triumphs evil.
