There are those who spend their whole lives trying to become wealthy and there are others who are happy with what they have. Berl and Berlcha were two old Jewish peasants who lived in the small village of Lentshin. Everything they needed was provided for them in a way such that money was unnecessary. Samuel, their son, left his home at the age of 15 and later returned as a wealthy nobleman. He had ventured off to the ‘mysterious’ land of America to find a job in order for him to become rich and later help the villagers. When he returned as a nobleman, his parents didn’t want anything to do with his money because of the fact that they believed they had enough to provide their essential needs. In the beginning of the short story, the old Jewish couple, Berl and Berlcha, had been driven from their homes in Russia and had settled in Poland.
