The most obvious plot in the movie involves dancing itself. The greatest scenes were where we get to see some magnificent dancing. The dancing was in some ways erotic, and very intense and heavy. It showed how the early 1960's songs could be danced to in a new, sexy, confident way.

The initiation into womanhood will soon follow, but first, baby gets involved in the sad case of Penny, a dance instructor and longtime friend of Johnny, who is pregnant. Baby, being the do-gooder she is, comes to the rescue. She gets money from her father, which poses perhaps a problem. Her father does not know that the money is for Penny to get a not yet legalized abortion. Better yet, she will replace Penny in a dance number at another resort. In a matter of a few unbelievable days, which also go undetected by her parents and others, Baby gets a crash course in dirty dancing from Johnny.
