Throughout history there has been thousands of dominate empires, but none as dominate as the Roman Empire. Rome’s great empire included over one million people, and ran in a stretch of over two million miles. Rome’s government was very public oriented. Rome had huge public buildings that allowed people to participate in public life. The emergence of a great army assisted in Rome’s dominance. The army was very strong, and used very advanced tactics. Roman leaders seemed to have an obsession with death, so they organized gladiator fights to take place in the local arena. In 80 AD the Coliseum was constructed. Holding over 50,000 people, and standing fourteen stories high, the Coliseum had entertainment all day long. Over 3,000 gladiators would fight animals, prisoners of war, and wild beasts. Gladiators that won would receive cash prizes and most importantly the approval of the people. Many of the fights were to the death, and the Roman people could not get enough of it.
