Aaliyah

“So many lives she touched. She probably never had and inkling as to how many people loved her.” These were the words of Darlene Corbin on August 31, the day that Aaliyah Dani Haughton was laid to rest. Multi-talented singer and actress, Aaliyah released three chart topping albums and snatched a role in a number of films. She was not only a talented entertainer, but also a great person. That is why today, November 1, 2001, on the day of the dead, we honor the life of Aaliyah.

Aaliyah Dani Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of five, Aaliyah and her family moved to Detroit. Just one year later, she starred in the school play Annie, for then she is when she realized that she had a special gift, her voice. Moving on to bigger things, Aaliyah appeared on the syndicated television show Star Search as she wowed the audience singing “My Funny Valentine.” She also had the experience of singing backup for Gladys Knight at a hotel in Las Vegas for five nights.
