Cruising down the freeway with the top down, suddenly you look at the review mirror only to see blue and red lights flashing behind you- that hidden police officer clocked you doing 75 in a 65. It does not take more than a weekend in College Station to know that many students in the area are being pulled over and ticketed by police officers. According to Alex Carroll, “Over 100,000 tickets are written in this country everyday. Most of them are undeserved” (Carroll 9). Obviously driving laws are a necessity on the roads today. Without them people would drive careless and reckless. The cost and the consequences of receiving a ticket can become very costly and affect ones driving record. Punishment for traffic violations needs to be reduced, particularly for first time violators. The consequences should, however, increase after multiple offenses, and not be so excessive for somebody that made one error in judgment while behind the wheel.
