Film Analysis of Field of Dreams

Ray Kinsella is an ordinary man from Eastern Iowa who has an extraordinary event happen to him that will change the life for him and his family forever. The movie "Field of Dreams" was released in 1989 and stared Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Burt Lancaster. The film was nominated for three academy awards including "Best Picture".

The film begins with a narrative of the life of Ray's father. His father played baseball when he was younger but never made it professionally. Instead, he got married and had a son and worked at a factory his entire life to support his family. Ray played baseball early in his life and was forced to live out the dreams of his father. Ray's father wanted him to go on and play baseball professionally since he never got the chance too. However, Ray saw things differently and rebelled against his father's wishes. He went to college at the University of California- Berkeley. He attended Berkeley he majored in English but really majored in the youth movement of the 1960's "Peace, Love, and Dope" was among his favorite saying of the era. While attending Berkeley, he met the love of his life Annie. They were married and after colleg


The movie ends with Ray playing catch with his father something he had not done since he was 14 years old. His dad asks his son if this is heaven, Ray responds by telling him that this is Iowa. A confused Ray asks his dad if there is a heaven, his father responds by saying that heaven is where your dreams come true. Maybe the field is heaven.

Collectively they travel to Minnesota and discover that Moonlight Graham died sixteen years ago. They are still puzzled why the voice leads them to Minnesota, so they learn more about Graham's life. He played baseball professionally and was called up the majors to play in one game. He played but never got to bat and was sent back to the minors without getting the chance to hit against major league pitching. Graham quits baseball after being sent back down to the minors and goes to school to become a doctor. He lived out the rest of his life in Minnesota where he raised a family and devoted himself to helping out the poor children of his community. He touched many lives as a doctor but never got to live out his dream of facing a pitcher in the big leagues and getting a hit. Ray learns this when he has a mystical encounter with Moonlight Graham. Back in Iowa the financial problems, keeps piling up and Annie's brother Mark wants to buy the farm and tear down the field and restore it back to farmland. So Ray and Terrance travel back to Iowa to see the field and on the way back to Iowa they pick up a hitchhiker. This hitchhikers name is Archie "Moonlight" Graham who is looking for a place to play baseball. Now, Ray, Terrance Mann, and Archie Graham travel back to the place where all of the action began.
