How Successful Have Revolutions proved as Ways of Changing t

Revolutions as a catalyst for change are always going to be 'world changing' events. By their nature a revolution pertains to either the overthrow of an existing political system or a dramatic change in ideas or practice. Yet one must consider the wider world in context. Whilst in all cases the revolution will change the immediate area, which may be considered by the local populace their 'world', in a wider context the actual impact of the revolutions may not have such an impact, or as in most cases that will be set out in this essay the revolutions will be set as a part of a larger set of circumstances. Revolutions are never isolated incidents, but a reaction to events viewed by a section of the populace, which they view to be unjust or wrong.

The degree of success in changing the world is exceedingly difficult to ratify. In some systems such as Marxist Communism, the fruits of revolution may yet bloom from the failures of the democracy we are now living in. Thus the impact of the 1917 Russian Revolution may still be considered to be carrying on to this day within China, Cuba and North Korea, and these nations, especially in the Far East may yet change the world in the name of the Communist ideals they follow. Ev

en now the impact of the French revolution can be seen within the democratic ideas the country shows, and through her actions within the European Union, upholding the constitutional ideals held by the original revolutionaries from back in 1789.

Whilst the sheer number of Revolutions across Europe in 1848 is alarming in itself, none of the Revolutions were world changing. Mostly they were concerned with local matters such as the Viennese tobacco riot's, and the Palermo Revolts, and as such their effect was limited to the locality they were in. In the case of Italy, the strong leadership of Victor Emmanuel and Garibaldi's military genius eventually led to a unified Italy, the events there were bolstered by Austrian failings elsewhere in Europe. It would have been likely that if the revolutions had been isolated incidents as opposed to a Europe wide fervour, not many would have survived long under Austrian reprisals to restore their desired form of order.

The French Revolution was beset with problems and invariably led to the rise of Napoleon as Emperor of France. With Robespierre's death the government of the Directory continued to rule the Republic under the revolutionary ideals laid down in 1789. Napoleon's regime was not a continuation of the revolution in any real way. Rather, it was a simple scramble for personal power and influence, justified by revolutionary values and ideals. The fact that the majority of Europe came under the French shroud formed massive Nationalist sentiments which in turn influenced many of the Revolutions of 1848, yet this link can not fully go to justify the French Revolution as a major contributing factor to these revolutions. Rather it was the revolutionary principles of 1789 which Liberals could embrace as a model for change within their country. The French Revolution served as an inspiration which would effect Europe massively in years to come.

Quantifying the success of any revolutionary movement is exceedingly difficult. If the movement achieves it's goals then one can say it is a success, yet the means can be dubious which can limit the perception of success by outsiders. In general revolutions have prove
