"The Commitments" is a loud, comic extravaganza about aband from the poorest slums of North Dublin that decides to play soul music for the working people of Dublin. The organizer of the band and who I feel is the most important character is the manager Jimmy Rabbitte. Jimmy is a young man who knows music and knows what's cool, who has the business mind to bring in new musicians and the potential to make the band a success. Jimmy introduces the band to soul music. The band likes soul music, but they don't particularly identify with it. Jimmy's logic is persuasive: "The Irish are the blacks of Europe. Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. North Dubliners are the blacks of Jimmy Rabbit is the band's manager, and perhaps one of the most complex characters. At first, it seems he believes the band is just another moneymaking scheme. When things started coming together in the group's performances, I believe he started to see The Commitments as his way to fame. He would hold imaginary interviews with himself, and give the reporters deeply felt responses when actually interviewed. He had spent some years receiving unemployment benefits, and I think that he wanted more, which where the band fit into his plan
