Humanity: Can we preserve it?
A detailed Summary of Humanity: Can we preserve it?
In the Dalai Lama's speech, " The Human Approach to World Peace", there were views on modern day technology and scientific advances and the effects science and technology have on has on morals and values. It seems as if science is the cause of a large amount of cruelty and immorality in society today.
Webster's dictionary defines humanitarian as being one who is devoted to the promotion of human welfare and the advancement of social reforms. The author expressed his concern for "humanitarian values" (1), and his beliefs of what would happen if current circumstances in society weren't changed. He spoke of the many advances of science and technology such as nuclear weapons and realized that still, there are human tribulations that have not been corrected or improved upon. He believes that there will be no peace until a balance is made between science and morality. The Dalai Lama feels that if we continue to focus mainly on computers and other technologies we all will be in danger of losing our ethics and the principles that are so important to us being decent human beings (1).
An advance in science that captures the essence of how morality is being eliminated is the cloning of humans and embryos. Science has come up with a

way to duplicate the most important aspect of being human, which is reproduction. I think that if conjuring up a potion and growing an embryo in a tube can make humans, then the uncharted things an infant goes through when he or she is growing and developing a bond with its mother will be loss. There has been research done that proves that a child that has been separated from its mother at birth is more likely to become unruly and unsympathetic than a child who has that maternal bond (Forcibly Breaking the Maternal Bond; Liss pg.1). I believe cloning will produce the same results; bad mannered souls.
The Dalai Lama gave his opinion and views about nuclear bombs. The bombs were invented to protect and serve humans, it seems that the US is now using them to bully and threaten other countries into submission. In the beginning the nuclear bomb was made for use in WWII; its sole purpose, it seems, was to prove to others that our nation was strong and prepared if a threat should occur. We had no real intent to use them, or should I say we hoped that there would be no use for the bombs. Other countries such as the U.N. have bombs as well and threaten us with this same fatal danger; America's only retaliation is to make other nations reveal their bombs as we built bigger, stronger and more
