Ataturk, a Great Leader
According to John F. Kennedy, he was "one of the greatest figures of our century." Winston Churchill called him "a great hero," and former French President Charles de Gaulle said, "He was the greatest achiever among all the world leaders, because he modernized his nation". The great man is Ataturk, the idol of the Turks. His original name is Mustafa Kemal, but in 1934 his constituents gave him the name Ataturk, which means, "Father of the Turks." He was the first president of the Republic of Turkey, and without his reforms and leadership, Turkey would not be what it is today. His endeavor was to modernize Turkish life; he wanted to give his nation happiness, better life standards and equality. In his view, modernization of the nation and the state could become real by replacing Arab alphabet with Latin alphabet, giving women the right to vote and participate in the congress, and abolishing the Ottoman Empire's sovereignty with a secular government and a contemporary constitution. Ataturk was not only a Turkish leader who modernized his nation, and gave them freedom. During his presidency, he sent crucial messages to the other nations about the importance of a peaceful and respectful world. Even though he was a conqueror who won numerous victories against invaders, he always emphasized that Turks are the friends of all civilized nations. After the declaration of the independence of Turkey, he signed peace treaties with all the countries that tried to invade Turkey in the past, because he wanted to change the aggressive structure of the foreign policy that was used by the Ottoman Empire Sultans. Because of the stress in his life, Ataturk started drinking when he was young. As he got older, he became a heavy drinker who preferred petite meals; as a matter of fact he started to experience serious health problems. His illness was cirrhosis of liver, and it was diagnosed late. On 10th of November 1938 at 09:05am in Dolmabahce Palace of Istanbul, father of modern Turkey died at the age of 57, after ruling his country for 19 years. When government confirmed his death, thousands of people did not believe, and walked to the Dolmabahce Palace to see him. People did not want to believe that he died, because he had an immortal figure in their minds. His funeral was one of the saddest moments of Turkish history.
