Post 9/11 IT
When reflecting upon the horrendous attacks suffered by our nation on September 11, 2001 it would be extremely difficult to choose one aspect of American culture that has been exceedingly and notably affected to greater an extent than another. So many things have changed, diminished or been developed in the interim since this tragic event. Lives have been inexplicably altered out of both fear and protection. This holds true in the Information Technology realm as much as it does in airport security. Great measures are being taken in the IT field in order to ensure privacy while not detracting from our liberties, On the morning of September 11 the twin towers stood silent, then ablaze and by the end of the day smoldering on the floor of lower Manhattan. Two hundred and thirty miles south, in Washington D.C., the Pentagon also had succumbed to the attack of the formidable terrorists. It did not lay in ruin but had been heavily damaged. Amongst the rubble of these three buildings lay the innocent victims of terrorism. Also amongst the rubble lay technological products containing irreplaceable information. These attacks displaced 1,000,000 users, destroyed 3.5 million data lines and greater than 3 million switch circuits.
While terrorists may be able to affect our technological world, it is important to understand that for the most part our lives are not endangered. The hacking of a computer, or the perpetual sending of a virus may destroy files yet it does not affect our lives too extensively if proper precautions are taken and if the appropriate people are placed in charge of these precautions. The NSA while admittedly falling technologically behind (as mentioned in numerous journals) should further subcontract their technological development in the further utilization of the afore mentioned company,(SAIC). Optimistically thinking governmental agencies will have the appropriate security measures to place the cyber world at a sense of ease. In turn, stronger cyber policies would enable better governing of the Internet. For example, the IEEE organization might enact more stringent standards when endorsing protocols and devices that can be easily altered. Individual companies may also now understand the importance that technological security provides not only for themselves or their customers but for the economy as well. National ID cards, a long proposed issue, gained increasing notice following September 11th. They would be issued to every citizen of the United States and would contain vital information concerning the carrier of the card. They would not work on a state-by-state basis such as driver's licenses but rather on a Federal basis with every person being contained in a massive database. Although this proposal has been brought into light, disappeared and brought into light again, it remains a possibility
