Off in the distance somewhere behind me, I could vaguely hear the voices of the others in the rafts floating down the rushing White Salmon River. As our boat continued to float down the stream, the green foliage on the banks slowly passed by. The sunlight danced in our eyes off the ever changing river. For the fourth time today, the oars man yelled, "Cover!" In one swift motion, we all quickly sank to the bottom of the boat, jamming our feet into the crevices under the front seats. Simultaneously we pulled our light weight plastic paddles along the side of the boat and threw our arms over the rear seat, hanging on as if our lives depended on it. Sitting there on the bottom of the raft, I felt my heart beat with a nervous rhythm anticipating wh
Everything went into slow motion the instant the raft plummeted over the ledge. Immediately I flexed my muscles, took a shallow breath of the oxidized air, and wedged my body into the boat while a white vapor surrounded us. Slowly the boat descend, seemingly to be freefalling through the air. The front of the boat, along with its occupants, submerged into the frothy bottom. A wave of white water washed over the raft, quickly chilling everyone it touched. As if the raft had a mind of its own, it refused to stay submerged and clawed back to the surface. We shot out of the drop zone, hearts pounding furiously, and exhilarated to emerge out in one piece.
