A detailed Summary of Democracy


The reputation of the United States' government is recognized as one of the earliest establishment of a democratic society. It was one of the only republic known to man which was not created by a supreme hierarchy, and therefore United States was known to be a true democratic government. However to this day there are many dilemmas which arise from the documents created by the forefathers of this country. There were many occasions where civil liberty and justice was ignored. Although, much has changed since the birth of this nation, there are many occurrences where democracy of this state has been questioned.

To achieve a state where the representation by the people is required for the society to endure a "political scripture" was created. According to Maier a scripture was created to endure this nation with democracy which she explained as the political scripture: "Statements of belief and practice written during the American Revolution, to which generation after generation of Americans has returned for guidance and direction. Over time, they came to define the Americans as a people."(Maier) Based on this statement, Maier's descript


What is very surprising to me is how much was changed from the original scripture of the documents, so that it may benefit the elites and the rich. In the original statement by Mason, "All men are created equally free" (Maier); it was later changed by Jefferson by removing the word "free" from the draft. I found that very astonishing because the reason for that document was freedom from oppression. Also it is quite unimaginable about how hastily the constitution was created and edited, I believe the urgency was so that the public would not be able to critic it.

There were a few incidents during the revolution where Maier's argument would be reassuring- in a letter by John Adams to John Sullivan, "Women will demand a Vote.
