After the Cuban Missile Crisis both the United States and the Soviet Union saw the danger of the Cold War escalating into a shooting war. Both countries had and continued to stockpile weapons, specifically nuclear bombs. The two countries nuclear capabilities combined were reaching and surpassed the critical benchmark of when we could destroy the entire world. This constant threat of extinction made the US very wary to enter in direct conflict with the Soviet Union. Instead both superpowers looked to other venues of attack against each other. They could fight against each other in Third World countries without having to the giant step of a direct act of war. Still the Soviet Union continued to support the spread of communism and America continued the policy of containing the spread of it. The Middle East and Africa were very unstable regions and both became stages for the struggle of Democracy versus Communism. Israel did not get along with the rest of the Arabic countries. The Arabian countries actually wanted to destroy it but Moscow did not want any part in that. The Soviet Union also was supplying Egypt armaments that would be later used to fight Israel.
