After the Cuban Missile Crisis both the United States and the Soviet Union saw the danger of the Cold War escalating into a shooting war. Both countries had and continued to stockpile weapons, specifically nuclear bombs. The two countries nuclear capabilities combined were reaching and surpassed the critical benchmark of when we could destroy the entire world. This constant threat of extinction made the US very wary to enter in direct conflict with the Soviet Union. Instead both superpowers looked to other venues of attack against each other. They could fight against each other in Third World countries without having to the giant step of a direct act of war. Still the Soviet Union continued to support the spread of communism and America continued the policy of containing the spread of it. The Middle East and Africa were very unstable regions and both became stages for the struggle of Democracy versus Communism.
Israel did not get along with the rest of the Arabic countries. The Arabian countries actually wanted to destroy it but Moscow did not want any part in that. The Soviet Union also was supplying Egypt armaments that would be later used to fight Israel. In the Six Day War of 1967 Israel fought off Egyp
The Middle East was a virtual tinderbox and will continue to be so for quite some time. During the 60's and 70's the boundaries established after WWII were very tempting to violate because it was not too many years before that they were completely different. Also the religious and cultural differences in this region made it very dangerous. With America and the Soviet Union involvement it only fueled the conflict. Africa was not as a dangerous situation so much as it was the spread of communism and Soviet Union influence that got the United States worked up. The involvement of these superpowers made this situation much more tense. The thing is that neither government had complete control over the Third World country that they aligned themselves with. Egypt disregarded Moscow and initiated the Yom Kippur War. Israel refused to give up the land that they took during the Six Day War and following conflicts. This is to show that the superpowers were not in control but played the role of advisor and protector. America did establish a strong presence in the Middle East and communism did take control of Angola. These two major skirmishes did not lead to a disastrous superpower war so the Cold War remained cold even with the occasional hot flash.
