SHAKESPEARE'S LIFE

Shakespeare was born on 23April 1564,at Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, a prosperous small market town of about two thousand inhabitants. He was the third child and the first to survive infancy. He was to be followed by five brothers and sisters. His mother was Mary Arden. She came from respected family. His father was John Shakespeare, a prominent citizen in Stratford. He was a glover and dealt in wool.

William Shakespeare's literary works made us wonder about his childhood education. It's a fact that we have no record of Shakespeare's early childhood activities. Although there are no surviving enrolment registers, there's a big chance that he might have attended the King's New School at Stratford, since William was the son of a public official. The standards at the Stratford grammar school seem to have been higher than average; existing records indicate that all the masters of the school during the time Shakespeare would have been attending held university degrees.

Shakespeare retired from his theater work in 1610 and returned to Stratford. His friends from London visited him. In 1613 the Globe Theatre burned. He lost much money in it, but he was still wealthy. He shared in the building of the new Globe. A few months before the fire he bought as an investment a house in the fashionable Blackfriars district of London.

On April 23, 1616, Shakespeare died at the age of 52. This date is according to the Old Style, or Julian, calendar of his time. The New Style, or Gregorian, calendar date is May 3, 1616 . He was buried in the chancel of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford
